As serious as domestic violence can be, many cases also involve arguments that escalate quickly. Some of these arguments take bizarre turns. Here are just a few of the recent Florida cases in which a bizarre argument lead to criminal charges:

First Coast News reports that a man was arrested for domestic battery by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Department. The charges stemmed from an argument that culminated in the defendant throwing a cookie at his girlfriend. It left a red mark on her forehead. Police referenced the cookie as a weapon (“other-dangerous”) in their report.

And according to ABC Action News, a Sebastian man was charged with domestic battery after slapping another man with a Big Mouth Billy Bass fish. The two men were arguing about the toy, and the victim eventually threw it away. Angry, the defendant retrieved the toy from the trash bin and threw it at the victim.

WTHR 13, a local NBC affiliate, reported that a Cocoa Beach woman was arrested after shooting her boyfriend during an argument. The argument was reportedly started due to the man’s snoring. He is expected to recover, but his girlfriend now faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery.

In Hudson, a woman was arrested for domestic battery after assaulting her boyfriend. Her outburst was reportedly triggered when she woke him to demand the couple have sex. He refused, and she scratched his eye. But perhaps the strangest detail is the fact that this was not the first time the woman had been arrested for assaulting a man who did not want to have sex with her. Local 10 reports that she was also arrested in September 2017 after hitting and scratching another man who declined to have sex with her.

Though many of the incidents are amusing, it is important to realize how serious they are. Defendants could face criminal charges, protective orders, and other serious consequences. They could even lose custody of their children as the result of a domestic violence conviction. This is why it is so important to be represented by an experienced domestic violence attorney in Miami if you are facing such charges. A skilled criminal attorney in Miami will be able to fight to exclude evidence that was unlawfully obtained, reduce charges that are not proportionate to the circumstances, or even dismiss charges that are not supported by the evidence.
